Things to Look Out for When Choosing Meat

When shopping for meat, a lot of people automatically choose the one with the brightest red color. However, did you know that fresh meat is purplish in color? Meat, when exposed to the air, reacts with the oxygen which is the reason it eventually turns red then brown.

If you are not so sure how to spot the best and freshest meat on the shelf, here are some tips you can use the next time you go shopping:

Check the color of the meat

The right color depends on the kind of meat you are looking for. Red meat should be in dark color, between purple and red. When a meat is already brown, it means it has been exposed to oxygen way too long. For pork meat, go with the blushing pink color.

Poultry meat, on the other hand, differ more in color because of their diet.  Fresh ones range from blue, white to yellow.

Look for the sell-by and use-by dates

Some meats are already packed, so the first thing to do is to check if the meat is packed most recently or not. If it is not, it is best to stay away.

Do not be fooled into buying cheap meats because those might have been in the shelf for too long already.

Check the smell

Probably no one likes smelling fresh meat, but this is one of the best ways to determine if it is still fresh. If it smells pungent, or if it smells unnatural, you better turn away from it.

Find clean-cut meats

Quality meats are usually butchered in smooth cuts and are uniform in size.  Do not choose jagged edge meat because it was unprofessionally butchered.
